"GOD OUR SAVIOR" IN THE BOOK OF TITUS

By Nana Yaw Aidoo

Professors of the Christian religion, have long contended that the God of the bible is a Godhead (Acts 17:29 ASV) and that Jesus Christ, is a Person in the Godhead.

Inasmuch as God is one (Deut.6:4), we ought not to think of "one" as a solitary or singular one. Rather, in view of the biblical evidence, the oneness of God is such that we can confidently say God is a "compound" one.

Just as 11 individual players make up "one" team, and just as 2 individuals of the opposite sex become "one" in marriage (Gen.2:24), likewise, the bible speaks of 3 distinct Persons, possessing the Divine Nature and thus these three are "one".

One of these 3 distinct persons that possess the Divine Nature is Jesus Christ and this is so forcefully taught in Paul's letter to the young evangelist, Titus, who at this time was located on the island of Crete.

In Titus 1:3, Paul uses the words "God our Savior". In Titus 2:10, we see the words "God our Savior" once again. Also, in Titus 3:4, the apostle shunned not to use the words, "God our Savior". It's evident from these words that God is the Savior of men.

Paul then goes further to tell us who exactly this Savior is. In Titus 1:4, he used the words, "the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior". Also in Titus 2:6, we're left in no doubt who our Savior is since Paul once again used the words, "Jesus Christ our Savior".

This is interesting. If God is our Savior and Jesus Christ is our Savior, then it follows that the God who is the Savior of men, is none other than Jesus Christ. Of this conclusion, there is no escape. Paul solidifies this conclusion with these words; "looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ" (Titus 2:13).

The grounds of our salvation, is not the blood of just a mere man, or an angel, but of the Omnipotent Creator of the world who took on flesh and dwelt among men (John 1:1, 14). Jesus Christ our Savior is God and the book of Titus bears us witness.

We'd do well to heed the words of Christ because anyone who would be saved at all, must hear Christ in all things (Acts 3:22-23). He says we must believe that He is the Son of God (John 8:21-24). He says also that we must repent of all our sins (Luke 13:3). He further says we must confess faith in Him before all men (Matt.10:32). Then in order to be saved, He says we must be baptized (Mark 16:16).

Do these things and you shall become a partaker of the "hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began" (Titus 1:2), which crown He'll give to those who being "in Christ" (Gal.3:26-27), would remain faithful to Him even unto death (2 Tim.4:8; Rev.2:10).

God bless us all in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
